The final star of episode one of Build Masters (in partnership with Gtechniq) isn’t just a showpiece — it’s a fully-fledged competition car. The Ford Escort Mk1 RSR featured here is a stripped, spaceframed, 900kg race machine built by SHP Engineering and driven by John, Ash’s dad.
Race Pedigree, Family Legacy
The build carries decades of motorsport history. John raced Mk1 Escorts, Mk2s, and Starlets back in the day. Now, years later, he’s back behind the wheel in a car that pays homage to that era — but with modern firepower and engineering.
Mustang Power in a Featherweight Frame
Under the bonnet is a stock 2.3L Ford EcoBoost engine lifted from a Mustang. With 400bhp and 520lb/ft of torque in a 900kg package, the power-to-weight ratio is off the charts. It’s paired with a French Sadev 6-speed sequential gearbox — compact, light, and brutally effective on track.
Why EcoBoost? Simple: it’s strong, affordable, and reliable. A new crate motor is just £4,500, making it a practical choice for racing — without going full Millington or Smith & Jones budget.
Build Masters Mk1 Escort: Built to Race, Refined to Win
The Escort RSR features a full fiberglass body, all built over a purpose-designed spaceframe chassis. Inside, it’s all race-spec: Tillett seat, electronic power steering, and dual sensor setups for temp and pressure to ensure reliability at full tilt.
Aerodynamic tweaks, upgraded intercooling, and airflow mods have already been implemented after early test runs showed heat soak issues. This is a serious weapon in development.
Track-Proven
Despite only just debuting in 2025, the car already has a Retro Rides Gathering trophy under its belt. With more testing underway, and John, Ash, and the family team constantly refining it, this Mk1 RSR is primed for big things on the club racing circuit.
But wait, there’s more!
