Mazda developing spark plug-less engine

Mazda is in the final stages of developing a compression-ignition engine that runs on gasoline. The four-cylinder unit will use homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) tech to burn gasoline without the use of spark plugs, potentially resulting in a 30-percent jump in fuel economy.
